It is important to consider the different advantages of social media platforms before choosing them to publish or promote your work. I plan on posting a podcast and a series of flash fiction, and have carefully selected the platforms that I will use.
I will use Podbean to publish an informative podcast, as this platform is specifically for podcast hosting and has features designed for this purpose. There is also a large community of podcasters and listeners on this platform, which means that I will have the opportunity to draw in a wide audience. The topic of my podcast is comic conventions, which works well in this format, as shown by the number of existing podcasts about comic books - searching for ‘Comic Books’ on Podbean gave me fourty five shows to choose from. As my podcast will be informative, putting it on Podbean ensures that anyone who is looking for the kind of information I am providing will be able to find it easily. Unlike other platforms that can be used for podcasts, like Soundcloud, Podbean has podcast branding in the title and is exclusively for podcasts, so it is likely that people who are looking for this specific form of media will check Podbean first. Podbean also allows users to provide an image for their podcast, which is important for establishing a brand. These reasons are why Podbean is the best platform for my podcast.
I will use twitter to publish a number of short creative pieces of flash fiction. This is an appropriate platform for this form of writing, as tweets need to conform to a two hundred and eighty character limit and short pieces of flash fiction can be less than one hundred words long. Twitter is also a good platform for publishing and promoting work like this because it is a widely used platform meaning anything posted there has the potential to reach a large audience. Short pieces of fiction like those that I will produce can become very popular on this platform, as people generally use twitter to pass the time and enjoy reading short and interesting tweets. I will put all of my pieces of flash fiction in one twitter thread, so that anyone who enjoys one story will be able to easily find any others that I have written. Twitter profiles are fully customisable, and I will be able to write a ‘bio’ for my account as well as providing a profile picture. This means that I will be able to link to any other platforms I am using, and use a similar profile image to the one used for my podcast. When creating a brand, these two ways of communicating information to a reader are very important. Twitter keeps track of how many people have liked and retweeted a tweet, which is useful as I will be able to tell which pieces of flash fiction were most popular, and tailor any future tweets to suit the demands of my audience.
I believe that these two platforms will give me the opportunity to successfully publish my work, and I will be able to promote each platform on the other with a link to establish a social media brand.
